Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber

As we were in Wales to visit my mad aunt P and K my cousin on their farm, (see 'The Farm - First Visit') we took the opportunity to visit the site. We had the place to ourselves and could taking in the atmosphere of the area and the view.

Pentre Ifan is the most well-known megalithic monument in Wales due to its height. They are the remains of a Cotswold Severn Tomb or a Portal Tomb or Quoit, from the Neolithic period around 3500 BC. for the communal burial of the dead. It could have been used for a while and then sealed.

Originally, the chamber was covered by a stone mound. However, these stones have been removed a long time ago, so that the original cover is missing.
The type of chamber is called portal dolmen, with the front of the chamber consisting of three large, upright and H-shaped stones. It is unusual that the portal was placed in the centre of a curved facade of stone slabs.
The enormous cover stone, which lies on only three supporting stones, is five metres long and probably weighs over 16 tons.
